Supplemental Vitamin D is recommended for all exclusively and partially breastfed infants. (400 international units daily until 1 year of age).
This baby’s weight loss of approximately 5% from birth weight is acceptable. While close follow up of all newborns being discharged from hospital should be ensured (within 48 to 72 hours), babies who have lost 10% or more of their birth weight require an assessment of adequacy of feeding and may require additional supports.
Ongoing monitoring of growth (weight, length and head circumference) using a WHO growth chart should be a routine part of health care for all infants.
